She's witty yet informed, has a geekish edge but presents eloquently, is to the point while captivating, and I'm in love with her book. It can be read from front to back (which it should) but can just as easily be read with pages chosen randomly. She makes you feel like you're sitting with her in her kitchen, she's so down to earth. That means you don't have to know the difference between a lager and an ale and what makes it golden, red, brown, or black, she'll tell you. Then she'll add some quirky anecdote to pair with it which makes it something you'll remember so the next time you order one, you'll know what's in the glass, in the nose, and in the mouth! But its not just a book about beer, it's also about pairing beer with food, cooking with beer, and making cocktails with beer. Not only is the writing exceptional, the design, layout and the photographs make this a visually appealing book. It should be your top book on the coffee table, or can be placed with your cookbooks! Better yet, bring it with you next time you go to your local brewery.
The title says it, and the inside delivers it. An Unpretentious Guide. The Author assumes nothing about the readers knowledge on the subject, she dives right in with basic concepts & definitions given in very easily understood language, while not talking down to those not already 'in-the-know'. For those readers with more advanced knowledge, the definitions don't seem to be 'dumbed down' or over simplified. I found the consistent structure of the beer style explanations very well laid out and the descriptions to be very real, honest & refreshing. After 3 decades in the Craft Brewing World, I enjoyed the descriptions for their sense of fun and discovery. The pictures were amazing, the sections on beer mixology & cooking make the book very interactive. Easy to read 'front to back' or just thumb through from time to time. This isn't a lecture, this is an invitation to explore!
With craft beer becoming incredibly pervasive in Seattle and Portland, it's really nice to have a nonjudgmental friend to hold my hand as I test the water and explore. Ashley is really knowledgeable and the book is well written. I can't wait to try some of the recipes.The photos are really beautiful. This is definitely a book to keep on the coffee table!
I have known Ashley for a long time- and this book represents a small part of her knowledge about beer. This is an easy to read guide to the beverage that will make you an "expert" by the time you are done. Get it- read it, you will truly enjoy it.
This book is great primer into the world of beer. It's well written with a humorous tone but never shy on the beer knowledge. There are sections about all the major beer styles, food pairings, and recipes for beer cocktails. Love the photos, too!
