This librarian loves to find a new dragon series and this one is a winner! Jaevid is a character that readers will be rooting for from the very beginning--loving mother dies, forced to live with a birth father who doesn't want him, no money, no hope of a future....But tides turn and Jaevid ends up at a dragon rider academy, finds friends (and enemies) of human and dragon-kind, and a whole new series filled with dragons, magic, elves, battles and all things fantasy opens up. I read through all 4 volumes in the series quickly and immediately tried to find them in hardcover for my junior high library. Sadly, paper and Kindle are the only formats, but if fans of dragon-lore spread the word, maybe new editions will come out in hardcover. Because Conway does not include unnecessary profanity or sexual innuendo, this series would be appropriate for any reader of the genre who can handle the likely reading level of grade 6ish and a length of 300+ pages, but probably best suited for grades 6 and up.
You could use this book to illustrate the difference between a really good writing and a hack. This author is very VERY good. Yes, this book follows a very common fantasy formula: hero is outcast; has unique skill that gets him training; must learn to find acceptance and overcome self-doubt; proves to be brave and resourceful. BUT the story is incredibly engaging and the author creates characters and situations that keep you turning the page till the end and then you immediately buy books 2 and 3 and put yourself on the waiting list for book 4.I won't spoil the story. I just want to assure you that books 2 and 3 continue the story in the same "can't put it down" engaging way. You aren't just reading a rehash.Besides, the first book is only 99 cents on Kindle and the rest of them are pretty inexpensive as well. You've got nothing to lose by trying and if you like fantasy, you'll be happy.
My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!!***Received the book as part of a tour for Avian (book 2) for an honest reviewThe cover is awesome. I love the dragon on the cover, and I think kids will be drawn to it because it reminds me of how dragons are depicted in video games like WoW.Okay, I wasn’t sure what to expect in this book because Nicole Conway is an author I have never read before, but I know from the first time I saw the cover and read the blurb that I wanted to read it. It definitely exceeded my expectations, and I loved reading it. The book is like the movie Eragon meets Lord of the Rings kind of vibe…well at least to me. :)I love Jae’s character because even though he is treated badly and abused by just about everyone he is so brave and loyal to the few people who are very worthwhile friends. He is so tenacious and never gives up. This is so hard to demonstrate to high school students. I know in high school, there is always so much strife and mistreatment from student to student going on, and when one of my students is upset, I always ask them if the person is their friend. When they tell me no way, I tell them then why care what they think? Don’t let someone else ruin your day or your image of how you think and feel about yourself! This was not something anyone ever told me in school, and I had to learn it much later in life.Felix is another awesome character. He will not stand for someone picking on or hurting one of his friends. He comes from money but does not let that define who he is. He lets his actions speak for him.Of course, you can’t leave out the fierce dragons who are awesome all by themselves. Mavrik sees something in Jae that no one else did, and they have an amazing partnership. I try not to give specific details in my reviews because I would never want to spoil your adventure into reading this book :)Nicole Conway does a fantastic job creating her world and describing it in a way that the images fill my head while reading. I can’t wait to read Avian next.I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading dragon books! I especially think this will be a phenomenal addition to my classroom library when I can afford to buy this series. I’m sad to say it, but my classroom library is severely lacking in content to attract high school boys into reading, and I think this book would help in this area. My high school students get such a kick out of me sharing my books with them, and they are even more amazed when they see that an author has signed the book and that I still share it with them. I will be reading this book again with my son in the future :)
Adults will like it too, but will find it feels a little abbreviated. The emotion in the book is definitely not abbreviated. There are parts that will bring tears to the eyes, the emotion is so well written. One would think that Ms Conway has experienced the rejection and isolation of her protagonist herself!Young people well enjoy this book because the descriptive language is short and concise and the action is fast-paced and very original.I highly recommend this book for young adults, and I even think adults would enjoy it if they are in the mood for a light and quick diversion into fantasy.
I would give this book 5 stars except for the fact that each book in a series really should be able to satisfactorily stand on its own or there should be an indication up front that the book isn't a stand-alone. If I'd only had this first book, I might have felt a bit frustrated when I finished it. Thankfully, I had the whole set and could continue on.All that said, however, I'd still give it more than 4.5 stars. I couldn't help but root for Jaevid from the beginning. His entry into the dragon rider academy, filled with hope and fear and all the challenges of relationships (human or otherwise) rang true no matter what world you inhabit. He and his pal Felix drew me into their world and I couldn't wait to see what happened.The author's writing is strong and the pace is good. I hadn't read anything by her before, but I'll sure be checking out some of her other titles.

I love those kind of stories and especially those with dragons. It is more for middle grade and teens but I certainly enjoyed the story too.If you love action, adventure, dragons, and suspense then this is for you! I loved the closeness of the dragon and rider bond. Great characters and plot. Well done.The narrator was perfect for this story! Great with the voices and keeping the story flowing just right! (or flying just right!)
