I decided to order this book to read to my budding history buff, 1st grade son. When I read the preface by the author's son, I knew I had made a good decision. I read the book for a bedtime story and it produced many many questions from my history inquisitive 1st grader. The next morning he woke up and asked me to quiz him on the details of the battle. With the many illustrations, it helped to keep his attention and pique his excitement for the topic. As others have said, this isn't an in depth book you'll use for a college thesis. Rather, it's a quick read that sums up a very important battle in the Revolutionary War. I for one desire my children to grow up with pride for their country. I want my son to know that brave men under horrendous circumstances fought against impossible odds to have Liberty. If he can understand that he lives in a great place and the principles of our Constitution are worth fighting for, then I'll be content. Just as the preface of the book says, a discussion has started and questions are being asked. As a 1st grader, my son now knows more about George Washington, The Continentals, the Delaware River, the drama of 1776 and The Battle of Trenton than a majority of seniors graduating high school this month do.Well done.
The cross media mixture of classical artwork, etchings, and historical documents is Jack Levin's signature style. This fantastic book is a must have for school children learning about our Revolutionary War. As the author correctly points out, the Battle of Trenton was one of the first major turning points in the war that secured our nation as independent and sovereign.I purchased this book in both the hardcover and the ebook formats. I am happy to say that the ebook has pictures that are clickable so you can zoom in for detail. I especially liked the maps, but then, I'm a map person! I greatly enjoyed reading the words of General Washington as he related the details of the battle to John Hancock, then president of the Continental Congress.A number of years ago, Newt Gingrich and William Forstchen wrote a historical fiction titled 'To Try Mens Souls' which gave a detailed account of the march on Trenton from a typical soldier's point of view. The internal conflict and the harsh conditions of winter were fully described. Honestly though, it took longer to read than the actual battle took to win. 'George Washington: The Crossing' is a great compliment, and both would make a great pairing of books in any library.Lastly, I think I echo many out there when I write that I would love to be a mere fly on the wall at a Levin family dinner. Jack Levin is not only a remarkable teacher, he is also a shining example of a father. His passion for our country is evident every time I turn on my radio at 6pm Eastern. For this I say 'Thank You sir, and may you have a very Happy Father's Day'.Home schooler families - buy it. Period.Librarians looking for a book to add to your juvenile history section, please review. I believe you will like what you see.
Washington Crossing the Delaware River on the night of December 25, 1776 with his ragtag, freezing army of Continental patriots has inspired generations of Americans and all lovers of freedom. Now in our day of historical amnesia this tiny gem of a book by Jack E. Levin arrives on the market to show modern Americans a small picture into the past struggles of our forbears. The author is Jack E. Levin the father of Mark E. Levin the conservative talk show host. The book can be read with pleasure and profit by anyone regardless of political affiliation. The book is beautifully illustrated and should be in every public library and in every classroom where the American Revolution is taught and discussed. Washington s defeat of the Hessians at Trenton gave hope to the fledgling American cause giving hope where there was despair and the smell of victory instead of the odious whiff of a defeated dream of freedom. As a Presbyterian pastor I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves our blessed land. Short but good! Recommended!
Great book for elementary school age children. It is suitable to be read to kids from 1st grade to 4th grade. A 2nd grader could read the book alone. What is nice about this edition being that if you read it to younger kids, there's a picture on each page that parallels the text on that page. And if the child is reading the book alone, these same pictures will maintain their interest. The content of this book reminds us of George Washington's bravery as a statesman and soldier. It tells of the lead up and actual combat involved in our first significant battlefield victory over the British on Christmas 1776. This was the battle that actually saved our Revolution from sure defeat. Although there were many hard times to follow between this battle and the surrender of the British at Yorktown, nevertheless it teaches the reader about perseverance, dogged determination, and the unwillingness to surrender at any cost. This is a great Colonial victory over the Hessians who were mercenaries fighting for the crown. There were many heroes on both side of the conflict. This was simply one story of many that illustrates our determination to attain our freedom from England. This is a story that should be read by kids of all ages. This was Washington at his very best. This was the victory that turned the tide of the revolution towards a colonial victory and ultimately our acknowledged independence. Without Washington and that one, cold crossing at Christmas 1776, things might have turned out a lot differently for this great nation we now call these United States Of America. The author, Mark Levin did a masterful job in telling this all important account of the Battle Of Trenton.
