The real and, hopefully, everlasting impact of his book involves providing non- soldiers a glimpse into what the soldiers endured, felt and lost while freeing a large portion of Europe. And to a lesser extent what impacts the civilians in Europe felt. The US POPULATION has not personally witnessed nor felt the impacts of war since the Civil War. This book provides as real a picture into horror of war on a personal level without being over dramatic or overly gory. The simple, straightforward, story telling style provides all the power of what is important.Read this book more than once. Reread it in five years. Let us never forget what war is, does, and destroys. Let us never forget the supreme sacrifice war requires. Let us not forget the concept of duty as it relates to war: nothing in civilian life compares. Let us always remember and cherish the lasting freedom provided by the prior generation.This is, in my opinion, what the book achieves. I think it is what veterans want us to remember.
This is arguably the best book ever written for those whom history is not their favorite topic to read. Ambrose's style tells the story like a novel, while including sufficient facts and detail history junkies like me will still appreciate.He answered one question I always had: Were the medics not shot at by either side? [no, I am not telling :) ]Even those whom "reading is not their thing" will likely find the stories that unfolds to be engrossing.If you have a book report on WWII due, read this. It will be the easiest one you ever wrote.
One of my favorite books of WWl It gets into the detail of the average soldier's life during the war.
Great book about the WWII European Theatre of Operations (ETO). Stories of war by Allied AND German soldiers. It also has photographs. Even though it is á pretty lengthy book, i hated to reach the end. Stephen Ambrose has done it again. I'm going to read this again on Memorial Day. You owe it to yourself. To read it and see what your fathers and grandfathers sacrificed so you could be free and beech about President Obama taxes, healthcare, and all the other trivial things haters whine about. Just thank God YOU didn't have to go through it. Great read. Thanks to Mr. Ambrose for writing it, and thanks to all the brave men and women who served. All gave some, but some gave all. We salute you. AND THANKS TO ALL OF OUR BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN WHO PUT THEMSELVES IN HARM'S WAY EVERYDAY TO DEFEND US!
Having been in awe of WWII combat soldiers since I was a boy, over 55 years ago, this is the first "big" book I have read about WWII combat soldiers... so I have nothing to compare it to.But it is a great book, and having read it I am even much more in awe of them, their courage, toughness, character, and more.Stephen E. Ambrose did a great job with this book.
No generation has done more to preserve the American way of life than this one. From the Depression into an unwanted war and then rebuilding both America and its enemies' homelands after victory, these people stand tall and alone atop the annals of history.This book captures the essence of the courage and sacrifice of these men and women. If that were it's only achievement, it would still be an important work. But the more significant contribution to humankind is the capturing and recording of these memories and emotions before these aging warriors pass on. Known for their stoic silence and humility, Ambrose has unlocked their minds and found a way in. They share experiences with him that they rarely spoke about to their own families. And in writing and publishing such works, he has loosened the lips of many more reluctant warriors who are more willing to tell their compelling stories than ever before.With less and less of the history of World War II being taught in schools, this vehicle will educate present and future generations with its quick and entertaining style, copious maps and pictures. I lived in France 15 years after the war ended. I saw first hand, some of the incredible destruction wrought as the Allies fought their way into Germany. In Nancy, a next door neighbor and I found bones (both of us were under 10) near a wrecked jeep which turned out to be a couple of GIs. I could not understand why they weren't found sooner, until I understood the incredible scale of the war years after. This is a superb view of the conflict from the dog faces' view - history needs this view of "our" war, compared to the typical European or Asian land war typified by the Russian Front.
This book is the best I've read about the ground war from D-Day onwards in the Western Theatre of World War Two. On the front lines, in the dirt, blood and total terror of what the cost of war really is. Read this first or last if you want to know what happened in Europe to defeat the enemies of freedom. Riveting.
