It give a general introduction in the first chapters and goes in depth to tools like hadoop and industry best practices in big data analytics. All in all its a great book and I would recommend anyone who is interested in this field read it !
The book is an essential in understanding the concepts of Big Data and its application in current industry.Not only it illustrates all the technical details of how Big Data technology works it provides functional understanding of Big Data usage across several industries like web,society,politics and several other aspects.It has in depth description from ingesting data using Kafka to analyzing using Spark ,Hadoop, MapReduce and reporting using PIG and Hive queries.
Not for computer scientists, but for Business people, it doesn't focus on the technical side of the components or how to set them up, but instead, focuses more on what can be achieved using those components. I didn't find this book appropriate for software engineers or computer scientists because of the reason stated above.

Not only it show you what is Big data, why we need it also it has good practical implementation guide at end of book for anyone itching to try get hand dirty on this hot topic.I recommend this book for everyone including students and another programmers who want to start practicing.Good luck.

After reading so many enthusiastic reviews, I was expecting more from this book. To be honest I had the feeling that I was reading a collection of articles. Not bad for the price though.
