Great book!
It would be difficult to write about central Africa without copious mentions of Frederick Selous. (Pronounced SEL-wa). He was a naturalist/elephant hunter in the 1870s-80s before the whites had seriously penetrated that area. A mine of information you will get nowhere else.That said, he is not the greatest writer and it shows up in this book. It is a basic military account of the field operations of the white settlers in the Second Matabele War, and to its credit, does not pretend to be anything else. But the subaltern's view which Selous writes can led the reader to confusion. What are the strategic aims (if any) of all these raids, reconnaissances, etc.? At the end of the book we are assured the war is won, but darned if I can figure how or why.This is a period piece and readers must take it on that basis. "The past is a different country; they do things differently there."
