Having read many books on the death of the Romanov family, Rappaport's latest fills in many gaps. Her exhaustive research is impressive.I dropped the book one star for the following reason: Except for a few lines on page 242, Rappaport barely touches on the actual murder of the family. I acknowledge that the book is what its title implies: A book about those who tried to save (or didn't try to save) the family. But it bothered me that the author clung so tightly to that definition.I can't help but think that anyone who hasn't read other books on the topic would wonder what happened to the climactic event? It seems like there's a huge gap there. How were they killed? What happened to the bodies? Etc.The author has a footnote on page 243 saying, "For full, forensic details of the murder of the Romanovs, and their burial in the Koptyaki Forest, see my book, Ekaterinburg." My first thought was, "Oh. An advertisement." I think some readers will be disappointed to learn they must buy another book to get the entire story. Even a summary of the murders in two or three pages would have avoided that.(I've read Ekaterinburg, by the way.)For those interested in the Romanov story, I'd suggest this isn't the first book to read. It is narrowly focused on the topic, like a research paper (which it is, I guess). It's also not light reading. Occasionally, I found myself saturated with detail and would put it down and read something else to recover. One VERY good thing in the book: In the early pages, she lists all the characters that will be in the book. Faced with yard-long Russian names and nicknames and royal personages with identical names, that was very helpful.

This is an excellent book. Rappaport did an exhaustively thorough job researching every aspect and nuance of the plots and schemes to evacuate the Romanovs. It was fascinating to read all the behind the scenes details, not only of the European governments and diplomats, but also the hidden gems the author was able to ferret in the most obscure places. The Romanovs had a very limited time to leave Russia, and they didn't act on it. How could they know what would happen, being so out of touch with the mood of the country, and as Rappaport suggests, it was unlikely they would have forsaken their beloved Russia. Rappaport also provides details how the Soviet government intentionally misled all about the true fate of the family. This is historical scholarship at its finest. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance copy.

It is a story that many think they know, but Helen Rappaport's "Race to Save the Romanovs" uncovers what was really happening (or not) throughout Europe to rescue Nicolas II and his family. The author skillfully walks the reader through their final days of imprisonment through the eyes of Nicolas II and his family, while presenting the parallel thriller of what his extended royal family throughout Europe did and did not do to save them. Her unique style of telling the reader about the process of her research and discoveries in italics, while presenting the continuing tale, makes this book a masterpiece. The reader can follow her finds, excitement and ultimate sadness just as she did when writing the book. It is about Nicolas II and " The Race to Save the Romanovs", but it is also about the race to uncover every small shred of evidence to either exonerate or not, those who may have had the means to save their lives. A must-read for any fan of Russian history, history or mysteries. The author has said this is her goodbye to writing about the Romanovs. I certainly hope not, because in a world where many claim to be Romanov experts, Helen Rappaport stands alone as the best.

I loved Nicholas and Alexandra, and have always found readings about the Romanovs fascinating. I thought there wasn't much left to learn. but this author has found previously-unknown documents that shed some light on motivations for actions and non-actions, especially on the part of the royal family in Great Britain, who seemed content to let their relatives be killed. This book lays some of the blame at Alexandra's own feet. I knew from other readings that she was not loved in Russia, but her hubris and folly seem to come to the forefront in this work. I was also touched by the fealty of the daughters, who seemed to have taken turns and spent their entire short lives caring for Alexandra in her many illnesses. At a certain point, almost everyone seems to have been reconciled to the deaths of Nicholas and Alexei, the prince, in the name of political necessity, but there is a heartbreaking account of an obscure female relative of the Romanovs who begs the government of Great Britain to let her keep the girls, promising to keep them out of the public eye. As always, it is the children who are the real tragic figures in this story. I found this an engrossing read.

For a book called "The Race to Save the Romanovs" there was no race, and no-one made any serious effort to save the Romanovs at all.The book is an interesting history of the international reaction to the fate of the Romanov family, and if you are looking for an extended discussion of the lethargic "how can we dodge this hot potato and do as little as possible" reaction of the British government and others, along with the hare-brained schemes of a few ineffectual Russian loyalists, this is the book for you. But if the title leads you to expect a gripping thriller about a race against time to save the Russian Imperial Family, you will be disappointed.

I've read about every book there is in English & French about the downfall, exile and execution of the Romanovs, and find this to be an excellent addition to the literature on this subject. But, it's very detailed, and certainly requires some previous knowledge of the subject.I think the criticism that there was no "Rush" to save the Romanovs to be misplaced. No, there was no "Rush" but perhaps the title was pushed by the editors/publisher. The book is nevertheless a comprehensive account of efforts to save the Romanovs. One may agree or disagree of how the response of George V is recounted, but it's still a very interesting book.
